Planning for Bahçeşehir started in 1986, the Master Plan being drawn up by a Turkish firm with the help of two consulting European firms. This Master Plan envisaged a population of 90 thousand, 20 thousand dwelling units and a construction area of two million square meters to be developed in five stages.

Designers for the first-stage buildings were chosen in 1989 and construction commenced in 1990. Involving more than 40% of the total construction area, this stage was completed by 1993. All these buildings have been sold and delivered to their owners. Design work for the second stage finished in 1996, and with this stage 80% of the projected construction area was completed. Meanwhile the necessary cultural, educational, and medical buildings were speedily realized, as were the shopping, entertainment and bussiness centers. The establishment of Bahçeşehir College was followed by that of Bahçeşehir University, offering youngsters a chance to receive an education in tranquil surroundings.

The new residences are now being built through MESA-NUROL joint venture. 1,600 dwelling units will go up, with a first phase encompassing three 21-story and twelve 5-story blocks on a lot of 56,000 square meters. 325 housing units are currently under construction, with net areas ranging from 77 to 180 square meters and one, two, three and four bedrooms. The complex also boasts a community center, four outdoor swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts, and a children's playground. The dwellings now being built will be delivered to buyers starting in mid-2007.

The second phase involves large apartments with four rooms and a net area of 180 square meters, plus smaller flats with living room + 1, living room + 2 and living room + 3 rooms. Totalling 116 units, this phase also features an outdoor swimming pool and a community center.

Meanwhile, plans are being drawn up for the third and fourth phases.

 

One of the largest housing projects in the country, Bahçeşehir is situated on the European side of Istanbul next to the TEM superhighway linking Turkey to Europe, roughly 20 minutes' drive from the Atatürk Airport and 30-40 minutes from the city's bussiness centers.
